Displaying my Ignorance (I'll say Part 1 because it'll like happen again)

This is going to be short and sweet folks, sorry if you're expecting more!

I have to admit that I have lived in Edmonton for almost my entire life and have never heard it called the River City before this class. I have heard City of Champions billions of times, I've heard "Deadmonton" like Dianne Chisholm, but even she knew the term River City. I asked my brother if he's ever heard of Edmonton being called the River City. Much to my delight, neither has he! On this note, was the name abandoned when we became the City of Champions, or have I (and I suppose my brother as well) been living in some weird boxed world that has selectively blocked out the name from our ears. Anyways, that's it for now.
Cheers and thanks for reading (if you stuck around),

  2. I'd never heard of "River City" to describe Edmonton myself, but I *have* been living in that box you described. Even so, it's a pretty bland, generic descriptor...it's not like cities situated near or around rivers are a rarity.

I've definitely heard "Deadmonton" though, mostly in context of evaulating why the NHL's RFAs/UFAs won't sign here in the offseason, but I like it. I think it would be awesome if the name were officially changed to that; I'd be proud to live in a city that had that kind of self-deprecating sense of humour - ironic, isn't it?

I also think it would be cool if they added text underneath the "City of Champions" motto that said "Championship free for: _______ Years", with one of those adjustable flip signs with numbers on to fill in the number of years since we've won anything.

  3. Well, before it became a Rexall drug store, I went to a restaurant called River City Steakhouse on Jasper Ave. And there are a few small companies with "River City" in the name. Besides that, it's not widespread. And, as Doofaeus said, it's not uncommon for a city to be located on a river. I think of Saskatoon as River City more than Edmonton.

  4. I thought it was weird that it's called River City because I moved here from Winnipeg, and they also call themselves River City (they actually have two rivers, but that's besides the point). Anyway, I do think Edmonton is lacking a catch phrase that truly reflects the city.

  5. You know... before takeing this class I never herd it called the "River City" either.

I've heard "Deadmonton" a lot, mostly in reference to the increased murder rates and gang activity.

  6. The first I heard of Deadmonton was via a snotty English reporter covering the 2001 World Championships in Athletics who was, um, unimpressed with Edmonton.
River City seems pretty generic to me too.
I like the City of Champions moniker, although I think how defensive people get about it is funny. Doofaeus, I like your suggestion. Maybe Adam can get to work on adding that to the sign come summer.

  7. To Doofaues and Debrah, I can promise you for at least one day of this summer a sign to that effect will inhabit the entrance to the city from 97th street and the one from spruce grove via yellowhead. (I would've added the one from St.Albert but they took it from our jurisdiction last summer... jerks) As for the rest of you, (sans the omniscient kking :P) thank for you making me feel like i'm not completely alone in my ignorance of the city!
